Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott went to her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. She completed her secondary education her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. She was hoping to be an English teacher in high school. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of study and became an aide to teachers. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer and performing during poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. The singer performed at the Roots performance. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
